Into The Nineties

In 1992, Jack Palmer was elected President of the Council. A coalition-wide Evangelism roundtable was held at Abiding Presence, led by Gary Marco, which received many compliments and the desire by lay persons involved to continue such events. A Musicale afternoon was held on Feb. 16 with many of our congregation's musicians performing. It was a fine opportunity for fellowship and entertainment as well as a successful fund raiser. A large sign on the Route 31 side of the church was put into places after several years of planning and fund raising. The sign is illuminated and its message can be changed regularly to keep passing motorists informed of church services and programs. A flea-market and flower sale proved to be successful fund raisers in the spring. A surprise celebration honoring Linda MacNamara for her twenty years of service to Abiding Presence was kept a secret from Linda until the choir refused to follow her directions to sing the anthem! The service was followed by luncheon at Rider College. A special Council meeting was held in May to brainstorm on the topic, "Expanding our Ministry". Many good thoughts came out of the meeting, and several were implemented. Pastor Confer announced his intention to resign to seek a new call, and he soon received a call from Bethany, Palmyra. The congregation again began the process of determining its visions and needs for a new shepherd. The production of Lazarus, a musical play originating at the "Bread for the World" organization, became an opportunity for fellowship within the congregation and witness to the community. Countless hours of planning, rehearsal and set design culminated in a spectacular performance that left the audience uplifted and enthusiastic to spread the word that all must share so that all may be fed. To name a few of those who participated might detract from the tremendous effort of all who were involved in this labor of love. Suffice it to say that everyone who took part, as well as all who witnessed the production, were enriched by the spirit and message of Lazarus. During the same month, a stewardship dinner was attended by 50 people who enjoyed good fellowship and an inspirational speaker. Pastor Stanley Steele, Director of the Brauninger Foundation was appointed as interim director as the year ended. |
