Navigational Tips

  1. Extremely informative introductions, seasonal prayers, and all orders of service can be found in the front of the hymnal with page numbers found at the bottom.

  2. The hymn section follows page 338. Hymns 1-150 are the psalms, the very first hymn collection. Hymns 151-238 are service music pieces. All other hymns (239-893) are categorized under church year and topical sections.

  3. Words spoken by the pastor or leader are in regular type. Congregational responses are in boldface type.

  4. The hymn of the day is the principal hymn of the service according to Lutheran tradition. The ELW places the hymn consistently following the sermon in order to reinforce the emphasis of the day.

  5. The versions of the creeds in the ELW provide clearer translations of the original Greek. In the Apostles' Creed, the translation "he descended to the dead" has gained wider acceptance and best renders the breadth of meaning in the original Greek. In both creeds, the word catholic, meaning "universal," is part of the original Greek text.

  6. Two versions of the Lord's Prayer are provided in the ELW. For the summer, APLC will continue to use the traditional version for Saturday and Sunday worship services and encourage use of the contemporary version for the daily prayer offices.

  7. Both the offertory canticle ("Let the vineyards..." Hymn #184) and the post-communion canticle ("Thankful hearts and voices raise..." Hymn #207) used throughout the summer are variable portions of the communion liturgies. Worshippers will need to turn to the hymn section for those two pieces and to pay attention to slight wording changes for Trinitarian clarity in the post-communion canticle.

  8. After a splendid adaptation to ELW with Setting One, we will now use Setting Ten from May 4th until September 7th. Setting Ten (in keeping with strong Lutheran tradition) uses familiar hymn tunes for the sung liturgical portions.
