Below is the summary of the Youth Activities and Ministry for last year - 2015.
This past year the main focus of the Youth Committee was to fund raise and send a group of youth to the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering. This an event that happens every three years, and in 2015 was held in Detroit, MI. The intent was that 1/3 of the total cost to attend the gathering comes from student family, 1/3 directly from APLC, and 1/3 through fundraising and support from the APLC Congregation.
Our year started with serving the Hoagie Lunch at the APLC Annual Meeting, held on January 25. Twelve youth gathered to make and sell hoagies for the annual time of fellowship prior to the meeting. Thanks to all who supported our efforts!
The next fundraising activity occurred on Shrove Tuesday, the day prior to Ash Wednesday. On that evening the Youth gathered, made , and served a Pancake Supper for the Congregation. There was no direct charge for the meal and fellowship; the members were encouraged to take envelopes from a display numbered 1-150. These envelopes were then returned with the corresponding dollar amount as a donation. These envelopes remained up through Lent, and were a great success. Thanks to all who supported our efforts!
The final fundraising efforts included the annual Easter Breakfast, the Spring Flower Sale, and the Pie Auction as part of the Family Picnic held each June. The support of the Congregation was overwhelming!
As all of this fundraising was occurring, the students were preparing for the gathering. It was decided that it would be smartest to travel to the gathering by bus, and most economical if several congregations shared the cost of the transportation. As a build up to the gathering, youth and adult chaperones met for bible study and fellowship with others from our region to foster relationships. As everyone was going to spend at least 10 hours (each way) and a better part of a week in Detroit together, it was good to get to know each other. Our youth met and traveled with kids from St. Mark-Hamilton, Prince of Peace-West Windsor, and St. Bartholomew-Trenton several times throughout the Spring and early Summer to start creating bonds that would last through the Gathering.
On the evening of July 14, 9 youth along with 3 chaperones boarded a bus with the youth and chaperones from the other NJ Lutheran congregations and headed for Detroit. Worship in Ford Field, days of service in the community and activities with the NJ Synod were part of the experience. Thanks for the financial and spiritual support from the Congregation!
This Fall we welcomed Chris Resch as our Senior High Forum leader. He has brought a fresh vision and attitude to the ministry, and we thank him for his hard work. The students are continuing to find their roles in the Congregation, and have worked with the Fellowship Committee to serve the Christmas Dinner, and with the Worship & Music Committee by decorating the Christmas tree in the sanctuary just before Christmas.
